Hong Kong Rocks
by Steve Ho
Synopsis:
A hundred years ago, the father of Dai Hoi (meaning "vast ocean")
leaves for the United States to seek a better life. He promises to return
with wealth and fortune. Ever since he's gone, Dai Hoi's mother would
carry Dai Hoi to the hill top daily to watch over the harbour, hoping
to see the returning ship of his father. As time goes by, tears and sadness
turn Dai Hoi and his mother into stone, standing on the top hill ……still
waiting…!
One hundred years later, a teenager named Mabel is sent back to Hong Kong
from Canada to further her education. Missing her father greatly, Mabel
would often find solace up on the hillside where she would scream at the
ocean and imagine her voice being carried by the ocean's waves all the
way back to Canada. Today, she is again on the hillside venting her thoughts.
Suddenly, a lightening strikes and narrowly misses her. She thanks the
rock for saving her life and promises to return the favor one day. Unbeknownst
to Mabel, Dai Hoi is awakened by the same lightening hit and is transformed
back into human form again. Dai Hoi, dazed and suffering from amnesia,
follows Mabel home from afar. Mistaking Dai Hoi's identity as her cousin,
Mabel lets him stay with her and her 4 siblings. The following day, Dai
Hoi is left alone to wander around Hong Kong. Remembering nothing else,
his only thought is to find his father and begins his journey. Through
the eyes of Dai Hoi, the new Hong Kong is strange but exciting, full of
surprises and contradictions: the hustle and bustle of Times Square; the
tranquility of the tea house; the cut throat businesses of buying and
selling; the warmth of the street people who sing and dance for a living;
the old and the new; altogether make for a memorable day. Dai Hoi later
befriends a street performer Ah Choy. Ah Choy promises to cure Dai Hoi's
amnesia once and for all as his father is the famous fortune teller in
Temple Street. On the way, they are distracted by the Hong Kong's night
market and the Temple Street performances. At the end, he meets Ah Choy's
Grandpa, Iron-Cane Buddha, who reveals to Dai Hoi the true story of what
has happened to Dai Hoi's father… …
Since Dai Hoi's returning to human form, strange phenomena have been happening
throughout Hong Kong. Hundreds and thousands of lions, geese, monkeys,
wild chickens and other animals are seen roaming around the city and suburbs,
creating turmoil and chaos in Hong Kong. Do these events have anything
to do with Dai Hoi's returning to human form? What can Dai Hoi do to return
Hong Kong to its normal state?
For one hundred years, Dai Hoi cares nothing about the world and stands
still on the hill top watching from afar. But as a result of his one-day
visit down the hill, he has learned so much more, made so many friends,
been to so many places and even discovered the truth about his father.
His monument serves to remind his new found friends not to turn time into
stone.
